Nasrallah, MD<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-2042\" src=\"http:\/\/seragpsych.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/henry-110x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"abstract\">Recently,\u00a0<b>c<\/b>ontemporary \u201c<strong>c<\/strong>ulture\u201d has\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>apriciously\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfounded and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfused our national\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ommunity with a cringe-worthy<b><\/b> \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>\u201d word. Unfortunately, this was followed by only transient public\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onsternation, reflecting the\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>oarsening of our social\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ommunication and discourse and the\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ant of many. But the ripple effects\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontinue.<\/p>\n<p>As a psychiatrist who\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>losely observes the human\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ondition, I\u00a0<b>c<\/b>ontemplated the\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>urrent\u00a0<b>c<\/b>onfrontational tone in the media and wondered how\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>orrosive language\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>an\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfuse and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>loud our sensibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Then it occurred to me that there are many\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ommendable\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>linical \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>\u201d<b>\u00a0<\/b>words that describe what we psychiatrists do in daily practice. We stay\u00a0<b>c<\/b>alm while facing\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>rises, and help our patients achieve\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ertainty when stress makes them\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfused. We\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ompassionately\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>omfort and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>are for our suffering patients. We strive to engender\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ourage and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfidence when fragile patients are\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfronted with\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontinuous\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>riticism by\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>allous and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ondescending people. We remain\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>omposed when we\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ounsel patients with\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfrontational and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>rabby moods and help\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>orrect their\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onfusing\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onflicts. We\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>oordinate their\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>are with\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ourtesy, always aspiring for a\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ure for their\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>orroded emotional\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ondition.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"offset-region offset-block offset-block__with-content panel-panel\">\n<div class=\"panel-panel-inner\">\n<div class=\"panel-pane pane-block pane-medstat-dfp-medstat-dfp-native-offset\">\n<div class=\"pane-content\">\n<div class=\"medstat-dfp-slot block block-ad native_offset\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>But then I felt\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ompelled to go further and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>all on my\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>reativity to\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onsider \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>\u201d words that describe severe psychiatric\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>linical disorders. I\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ame up with the following\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ogent\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ascade of\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ommon\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>haracteristics of serious mental disorders:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"body\">\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>erebral pathology<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ircuit disruptions of neural\u00a0<b>c<\/b>onnections<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>hemical imbalance<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ytokine inflammatory\u00a0<b>c<\/b>on\u00adflagration<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ognitive impairment<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>hronic\u00a0<b>c<\/b>ourse<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>rippled functioning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ompulsion\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontinued. I decided to\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontemplate more \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>\u201d words that\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>apture our therapeutic\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ourse of action to\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>orrect a patient whose\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ortico-limbic\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ircuitry is being threatened with\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onsiderable, even\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>alamitous\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ollapse. My\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onsideration led to\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>larity, and I\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ame up with the following list of what we psychiatrists\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onform to in our\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>linical practice:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"body\">\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>onnect with patients<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>orrect diagnosis<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ourse-specific intervention<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>hoose the appropriate medication<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ombine\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ognitive-behavioral therapy with medication<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ognitive assessment at baseline<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ompliance\/<strong>c<\/strong>oncordance with treatment<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ontinuity of\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>are<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>omorbidities, physical and psychiatric<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>ollaborative\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>are with other medical specialists<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong>omprehensive treatment plan with other mental health professionals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A book about dirty words written by a psychoanalyst called the \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>\u201d expletive the worst of all\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>uss words.<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0Its recent emergence in the national media\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ompromised our\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ivility and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>reated a\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>esspool of\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontemptible\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onversations. Let\u2019s transcend the\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontemptible \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>\u201d word of a\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>austic\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontemporary \u201c<strong>c<\/strong>ulture\u201d (which had its 15 minutes of infamy), and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onsider the many\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>oherent and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ongenial \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>\u201d words of psych\u00adiatric practice that bring peace of mind and\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ontentment to those who suffer from psychiatric brain\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>onditions. As for the\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>ompulsive or involuntary use of\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>urse words that begin with a \u201c<strong>C<\/strong>,\u201d or any other letter, psychiatry has a\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>linical term for it:\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>oprolalia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Current Psychiatry. 2018 July;17(7):4,6 By\u00a0Henry A.
