Haloperidol (US brand name Haldol\u00ae and generic) is a first-generation (\u201ctypical\u201d)\u00a0antipsychotic.<\/p>\n

Here is\u00a0basic information about this medication.<\/p>\n

Oral Haloperidol (Tablets, Oral concentrate)<\/h3>\n

FDA-approved indications<\/h4>\n

1. Management of manifestations of psychotic disorders<\/p>\n

2. Control of tics and vocal utterances of Tourette\u2019s Disorder in children and adults<\/p>\n

3. Treatment of severe behavior problems in children of combative, explosive hyperexcitability (which cannot be accounted for by immediate provocation)<\/p>\n

4. Short-term treatment of hyperactive children who show excessive motor activity with accompanying conduct disorders consisting of some or all of the following symptoms: impulsivity, difficulty sustaining attention, aggressivity, mood lability, and poor frustration tolerance.<\/p>\n

Haloperidol tablets should be reserved for these two groups of children only after failure to respond to psychotherapy or medications other than antipsychotics.<\/p>\n

Dosage<\/h4>\n

A. Initial dosage range<\/p>\n

1. Adults<\/em><\/p>\n

Moderate symptoms: 0.5\u20132 mg,\u00a0two or three times\u00a0daily<\/p>\n

Severe symptoms: 3\u20135 mg, two or three times daily<\/p>\n

Adjust upwards, if necessary depending on patient response<\/p>\n

2. Geriatric patients<\/em><\/p>\n

0.5\u20132 mg, two or three times daily<\/p>\n

3. Chronic or resistant patients<\/em><\/p>\n

3\u20135 mg, two or three times daily<\/p>\n

Adjust upwards if necessary. Up to 100 mg\/day may be administered to achieve optimal therapeutic response.<\/p>\n

4. Children (ages 3-12)<\/em><\/p>\n

Initial: 0.5 mg per day<\/p>\n

Titrate: 0.5 mg increments every 5 to 7 days until the desired therapeutic response<\/p>\n

Maximum: 6 mg\/day<\/p>\n

Psychotic Disorders: 0.05\u20130.15 mg\/kg\/day. Severely psychotic children may need higher dosages.<\/p>\n

Nonpsychotic Behavior Disorders and Tourette\u2019s Disorder: 0.05\u20130.075 mg\/kg\/day<\/p>\n

B. Maintenance dose<\/p>\n

Upon achieving a satisfactory therapeutic response, dosage should then be gradually reduced to the lowest effective maintenance level.<\/p>\n

Dosage forms and strengths<\/h4>\n

Scored tablet (generic): 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg<\/p>\n

Oral concentrate (generic): 2 mg\/mL<\/p>\n

Haloperidol Injection (for immediate-release)<\/h3>\n

Indications<\/h4>\n

1. Treatment of schizophrenia<\/p>\n

2. Control of tics and vocal utterances of Tourette\u2019s Disorder<\/p>\n

Dosage<\/h4>\n

Initial dosage needs to be individualized on the basis of age, severity of illness, previous response to antipsychotic drugs, and concomitant medications and illness.<\/p>\n

Usual: 2\u20135 mg IM in acutely agitated schizophrenic patient<\/p>\n

Depending on patient response, may be repeated every hour, although 4-8 hours intervals may be satisfactory.<\/p>\n

May switchover to oral form as soon as it becomes practical. Oral dosage may be estimated by calculating the injectable dose administered to the patient in the previous 24 hours.<\/p>\n

Dosage forms and strengths<\/h4>\n

Immediate-release injection (Haldol\u00ae and generic): 5 mg\/mL<\/p>\n
