Short-term treatment of hyperactive children who show excessive motor activity with accompanying conduct disorders consisting of some or all of the following symptoms: impulsivity, difficulty sustaining attention, aggressivity, mood lability, and poor frustration tolerance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-5212\" src=\"http:\/\/seragpsych.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/How-To-Handle-Aggression-in-Young-Children-300x199-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"How-To-Handle-Aggression-in-Young-Children-300x199\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Haloperidol tablets should be reserved for these two groups of children only after failure to respond to psychotherapy or medications other than antipsychotics.<\/p>\n<h4>Dosage<\/h4>\n<p>A. Initial dosage range<\/p>\n<p><em>1. Adults<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Moderate symptoms: 0.5\u20132 mg,\u00a0two or three times\u00a0daily<\/p>\n<p>Severe symptoms: 3\u20135 mg, two or three times daily<\/p>\n<p>Adjust upwards, if necessary depending on patient response<\/p>\n<p><em>2. Geriatric patients<\/em><\/p>\n<p>0.5\u20132 mg, two or three times daily<\/p>\n<p><em>3. Chronic or resistant patients<\/em><\/p>\n<p>3\u20135 mg, two or three times daily<\/p>\n<p>Adjust upwards if necessary. Up to 100 mg\/day may be administered to achieve optimal therapeutic response.<\/p>\n<p><em>4. Children (ages 3-12)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Initial: 0.5 mg per day<\/p>\n<p>Titrate: 0.5 mg increments every 5 to 7 days until the desired therapeutic response<\/p>\n<p>Maximum: 6 mg\/day<\/p>\n<p>Psychotic Disorders: 0.05\u20130.15 mg\/kg\/day. Severely psychotic children may need higher dosages.<\/p>\n<p>Nonpsychotic Behavior Disorders and Tourette\u2019s Disorder: 0.05\u20130.075 mg\/kg\/day<\/p>\n<p>B. Maintenance dose<\/p>\n<p>Upon achieving a satisfactory therapeutic response, dosage should then be gradually reduced to the lowest effective maintenance level.<\/p>\n<h4>Dosage forms and strengths<\/h4>\n<p>Scored tablet (generic): 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg<\/p>\n<p>Oral concentrate (generic): 2 mg\/mL<\/p>\n<p>Please refer to Prescribing Information (see link below) for complete discussion of dosage, administration, warnings and precautions, contraindications, etc.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Haloperidol Injection (for immediate-release)<\/h3>\n<h4>Indications<\/h4>\n<p>1. Treatment of schizophrenia<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-783\" src=\"http:\/\/seragpsych.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/schizophrenia-makes-people-feel-out-of-control2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"schizophrenia-makes-people-feel-out-of-control\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Control of tics and vocal utterances of Tourette\u2019s Disorder<\/p>\n<h4>Dosage<\/h4>\n<p>Initial dosage needs to be individualized on the basis of age, severity of illness, previous response to antipsychotic drugs, and concomitant medications and illness.<\/p>\n<p>Usual: 2\u20135 mg IM in acutely agitated schizophrenic patient<\/p>\n<p>Depending on patient response, may be repeated every hour, although 4-8 hours intervals may be satisfactory.<\/p>\n<p>May switchover to oral form as soon as it becomes practical.
