Here is basic information about this medication.<\/p>\n<h4>FDA-approved indications<\/h4>\n<p><em>1. As oral formulation for:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>a. Schizophrenia in adults and adolescents<\/p>\n<p>b. Manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and adolescents (ages 13-17 )<\/p>\n<p>c. Manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults (as an adjunct to valproate or lithium)<\/p>\n<p><em>2.\u00a0As Intramuscular injection for:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Acute agitation associated with schizophrenia and bipolar I mania in adults<\/p>\n<p><em>3. Olanzapine in combination\u00a0with fluoxetine for:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>a. Depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults<\/p>\n<p>b. Depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in children and adolescents (ages 10-17)<\/p>\n<p>c. Treatment-resistant depression in adults<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0Olanzapine is not approved for the treatment of dementia-related psychosis in elderly due to increased risk of death and cerebrovascular accidents.<\/p>\n<h4>Dosage<\/h4>\n<p><em>1. Schizophrenia (adults)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Start at 5\u201310 mg orally once daily orally<\/p>\n<p>Target: 10 mg\/day within several days<\/p>\n<p><em>2. Schizophrenia (adolescents)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Start at 2.5\u20135 mg orally once daily<\/p>\n<p>Target: 10 mg\/day<\/p>\n<p><em>3. Bipolar I disorder (manic or mixed episodes) in adults<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Start at 10 or 15 mg orally once daily<\/p>\n<p><em>4. Bipolar I disorder (manic or mixed episodes) in adolescents<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Start at 2.5\u20135 mg orally once daily<\/p>\n<p>Target: 10 mg\/day<\/p>\n<p><em>5. Bipolar I disorder (manic or mixed episodes) with lithium or valproate in adults<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Start at 10 mg orally once daily<\/p>\n<p><em>6. Agitation associated with schizophrenia and bipolar I mania in adults<\/em><\/p>\n<p>10 mg Intramuscular (IM) injection\u00a0(5 mg or 7.5 mg when clinically warranted).<\/p>\n<p>Assess for orthostatic hypotension prior to subsequent dosing (max. 3 doses 2-4 hrs apart)<\/p>\n<p><em>7. Depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults <\/em>(in combination with fluoxetine)<\/p>\n<p>Start at 5 mg of oral olanzapine and 20 mg of fluoxetine orally once daily<\/p>\n<p><em>8. Depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in children and adolescents <\/em>(in combination with fluoxetine)<\/p>\n<p>Start at 2.5 mg of oral olanzapine and 20 mg of fluoxetine orally once daily<\/p>\n<p><em>9. Treatment resistant depression in adults <\/em>(in combination with fluoxetine)<\/p>\n<p>Start at 5 mg of oral olanzapine and 20 mg of fluoxetine orally once daily<\/p>\n<p>General Instructions (from Prescribing Information)<\/p>\n<p>1. Lower starting dose is\u00a0recommended in debilitated or pharmacodynamically sensitive patients or patients with predisposition to hypotensive reactions, or with potential for slowed metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>2. Olanzapine may be given without regard to meals.<\/p>\n<p>Olanzapine and Fluoxetine in combination<\/p>\n<p>1. Dosage adjustments, if indicated, should be made with the individual components according to efficacy and tolerability.<\/p>\n<p>2. Olanzapine monotherapy is not indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder or treatment resistant depression.<\/p>\n<p>3.
